Principles of Design

Here's the link to the principles of design poster series by Efil Turk that Grace posted on her blog. What a great reference as you start your own poster layouts this week!

Principles of Design Poster by Efil Türk.
"The turkey based designer named Efil has crafted a beautiful series of poster showing the principles of design only using paper. Cutting pieces of paper, juxtaposing the pieces, pasting geometrical shapes and using simple typography is the formula of this beautiful series. She mention that you can actually buy them."

Here are some of the design considerations we discussed in lecture today:
  • Hierarchy (Rank, order)
  • Dominate/Sub-dominate Elements
  • Contrast (Using color, size, scale, weight, font family, etc.)
  • Alignment/Repetition
  • Symmetrical or Asymmetrical
  • Rule of Odds
  • White space with a purpose (the LUNGS of good design)
  • Juxtaposition

Welcome Fall 2014 BDS 101

Hello everyone! Welcome to our class blog, I look forward to getting to know all of you. Here are some of the resources I discussed in class today.

Dieter Rams: Ten principles for Good Design

“Back in the early 1980's, Dieter Rams was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him – “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colors and noises.” Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design?

As good design cannot be measured in a finite way he set about expressing the ten most important principles for what he considered was good design. (Sometimes they are referred as the ‘Ten commandments’.)” See link.

How to make photorealistic renderings using Photoshop

Here is a great Photoshop rendering tutorial website: Alex Hogrefe Tutorials

This tutorial shows how to create photorealistic interior elevations. These same concepts could be applied to a floorplan, SketchUp rendering, or photograph.
